That counts for coughs, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sniffles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fevers, and anything that isn\u2019t general fatigue. Remember, one day is just one day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t workout at home when you\u2019re sick (more on that below), but try to think of others when you\u2019ve got symptoms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_About_Home_Workouts\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What About Home Workouts?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to COVID, most of us have had to train at home at some point in the last few years. The risk of infecting others is low (unlike your toddler\u2019s daycare) and that means the temptation to workout when you&#8217;re sick is higher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/homeWorkout.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6089\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/homeWorkout.png\" alt=\"working out at home\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/homeWorkout.png 800w, https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/homeWorkout-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/homeWorkout-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/homeWorkout-700x394.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the problem: Your normal workout routine &#8211; the one where you\u2019re breathing hard and pushing your body &#8211; triggers a stress response in the body. When you\u2019re healthy, your body responds and adapts to this stress to get stronger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when you\u2019re sick, your immune system is already stressed. Adding more stress with a hard workout (or long, challenging run) might overload the system. That means you could get sicker.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rule of thumb<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? If you feel that your sickness will lead to a less <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intense workout<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then avoid your normal workout routine. At Born Fitness, our training philosophy emphasizes intensity. I\u2019d rather have you be healthy and push the limits during a short period of time, than feel like shit your entire workout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn\u2019t mean you have to become one with the couch when you\u2019re sick. As long as you\u2019re doing the right type of movement you can continue regular exercise while recovering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_To_Workout_When_Youre_Sick\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Workout When You\u2019re Sick<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First off, be sure to listen to your doctor\u2019s advice when you\u2019re sick. If they recommend avoiding any exercise, they\u2019re likely doing that for a reason. However, if you\u2019re cleared for exercise, low-intensity movement can help you feel better faster and recover sooner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What counts as low-intensity exercise? Think of things like walking or an easy pace on your favorite cardio machine if you have one at home. Or, you might do a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DXrWj93B4TY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mobility circuit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. My go-to is long walks outside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/walkOutside.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6090\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/walkOutside.png\" alt=\"walking outside\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/walkOutside.png 800w, https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/walkOutside-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/walkOutside-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/walkOutside-700x394.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key is to keep your heart rate lower during the session. You shouldn\u2019t be gasping for breath at any point or even struggling. And remember, low-intensity can look different for each person. Listen to your body and choose an exercise that you can keep an easy pace with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of these workouts like a day at the spa. You should leave feeling restored and energized, not beat down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Bottom_Line\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bottom Line<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We believe in training with intensity when you workout, but that doesn\u2019t mean you need to PR every workout when you\u2019re healthy. Many of your workouts are going to be \u201chard hat\u201d days. You just put on your hard hat, even if you\u2019re sore, tired, or not in the mood, and you make it happen. Those days are victories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, days when you force yourself to train when you\u2019re sick because of an irrational fear of needing to train, are a loss. Learn to pick and choose your battles and hold yourself to a high standard.
