One of the most common frustrations is figuring out what to eat, specifically knowing what to look for in a healthy diet.<\/p>\r\n<p>The reason for the struggle is that it&#8217;s not clear where to begin to fix the problem. It&#8217;s not like eating one food suddenly improves your diet.<\/p>\r\n<p>In fact, you&#8217;re likely already aware of what stands in your way. We hear three common barriers:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Time<\/strong> (or lack thereof)<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Confusion<\/strong> (not being sure of what to do or believe)<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Motivation<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A lack of time is a struggle for everyone. It feels exciting but also overwhelming. After all, you think to yourself, &#8220;I need to adjust my diet, exercise, and even my sleep. Where do I start?&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Maybe you decide to start by eating better, but what exactly does that mean?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Or, you say: \u201c<em>I\u2019m going to work out more<\/em>.\u201d But, in the back of your mind, you wonder, <em>\u201cHow much is \u2018more\u2019? Will it be enough to make a difference? And do I really have the time for that?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These are the sorts of questions that can kill your motivation before you even begin. You aren\u2019t sure what to do next, so you do nothing. Or, maybe you take a step or two, but then feel you aren\u2019t getting results. Soon, the entire plan starts falling apart.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>When you aren\u2019t confident that a change is going to make a difference, it\u2019s hard to truly commit to that change.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Habits_That_Make_Any_Diet_More_Effective\"><\/span><strong>4 Habits That Make Any Diet More Effective<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Before you can gain confidence in your plan, it helps to have more clarity in your plan.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Heath Brothers explain that when you know <em>exactly<\/em> what changes to make &#8212; and you see them make a difference &#8212; you want to keep doing them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That\u2019s essentially the same idea behind habit-based coaching. You take one step, then another, and another.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The changes needed for weight loss start with something that seems simple. Painfully simple. Perhaps, even boring.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking to build a healthy diet, it doesn&#8217;t start with extreme restrictions, blood tests, or need to measure every ounce of food. It begins with habits that help put you in control of your diet, no matter your food preferences or lifestyle.<\/p>\r\n<p>This includes time-tested techniques such as:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Eating slowly<\/li>\r\n<li>Chewing more<\/li>\r\n<li>Getting enough vegetables and fruit (yes, fruit. Fruits are not evil. Neither are carbs.)<\/li>\r\n<li>Sleeping 7-8 hours a night<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>All those habits are a big part of an effective diet plan, but you rarely hear them discussed.<\/p>\r\n<p>Eating slowly and chewing more helps ensure that the right signals are sent to your brain to indicate when you&#8217;re full.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Fruits and vegetables keep you fuller for longer, are loaded with valuable nutrients, and have been proven to help you eat less of the things you love but know you need to limit (hello brownie sundae).<\/p>\r\n<p>And, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/how-to-lose-weight-why-sleep-can-make-you-fat\/\">sleep is likely the most-underrated diet secret<\/a> because lack of sleep does everything from make you hungry to increase your cravings for salty and sweet foods.<\/p>\r\n<p>All of that knowledge is great, but following those simple habits can feel like a chore. So, how can you \u201cmake yourself\u201d do it?<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Stay_Motivated_Even_When_The_Scale_Goes_Up\"><\/span><strong>How to Stay Motivated (Even When The Scale Goes Up)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Motivation is tricky because it feels as if it\u2019s just a decision, but it\u2019s actually far more complex. Motivation is actually<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4864984\/\"> part-psychology and part-biology<\/a>, according to Eleanor Simpson, associate professor of clinical neurobiology at Columbia University.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Beneath every choice you make, your brain does a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/core\/lw\/2.0\/html\/tileshop_pmc\/tileshop_pmc_inline.html?title=Click%20on%20image%20to%20zoom&amp;p=PMC3&amp;id=4864984_nihms784543f1.jpg\"> complex cost-benefit analysis.<\/a> The calculation takes into account your surroundings, your history, and how you are feeling at that very moment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That math is more likely to come out in your favor if you\u2019re already seeing results. This is when you lose faith and motivation, and even the best plan falls apart.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That\u2019s when you need to realize two things:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>Remember that weight fluctuation (spikes, dips, and plateaus) are part of the process. Within any given week, if you weigh yourself daily, you&#8217;ll see days where your weight goes up.\u00a0<em>This is normal<\/em>. It could be a result of how you slept, whether you had more salt or carbs than usual, stress levels, and several other reasons. But, assuming you&#8217;re staying on track with your plan, the weekly and monthly trend should be headed down, which is exactly what matters.<\/li>\r\n<li>To help you get through those days when you see a spike or you &#8220;don&#8217;t feel like it,&#8221; make sure you&#8217;ve connected your goals to a larger mission. Or, you need to remind yourself what you&#8217;re doing, why you&#8217;re doing it, and that it&#8217;s time to get things done and make your goals a reality, even if it feels like it&#8217;s not going to happen.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Stick_To_Your_Diet\"><\/span><strong>How to Stick To Your Diet\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a simple technique to help keep yourself accountable, you might want to borrow a tactic that comes from General Stanley McChrystal, a retired four-star general who once led the U.S.\u2019s Joint Special Operations Command, which oversees units like the Navy SEALs and Army Rangers.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>According to motivation writer<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakadesuyo.com\/2017\/07\/how-to-increase-motivation\/\"> Eric Barker<\/a>, McChrystal always tells his soldiers:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Here\u2019s what I\u2019m asking you to do.<\/li>\r\n<li>Here\u2019s why it\u2019s important.<\/li>\r\n<li>Here\u2019s why I know you can do it.<\/li>\r\n<li>Think about what you\u2019ve done together before.<\/li>\r\n<li>Now let\u2019s go and do it.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Now imagine this as a conversation between you and your body. You say:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><em>I\u2019m asking you to go for a walk three times per week. <\/em><\/li>\r\n<li><em>It\u2019s important because we\u2019re trying to shed 20 pounds and walking burns calories. <\/em><\/li>\r\n<li><em>I know you can do it because you walk from your parking spot to the office every morning.<\/em><\/li>\r\n<li><em>You\u2019ve dedicated hours at a time to those<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fy3rjQGc6lA\"> <em>TPS reports<\/em><\/a><em> at work, so you have the attention span to do this. <\/em><\/li>\r\n<li><em>Let\u2019s go and get moving.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5110 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ifNotNowWhen-e1564254733327.jpg\" alt=\"blue building with &quot;if not now, when?&quot; painted on the side\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1320\" \/><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Try that for any change you make this year. And if it doesn\u2019t work, try listening to the Rocky theme before you do it.<\/p>\r\n<p>That may sound ridiculous, but it\u2019s effective. Barker explains that, when all else fails, energetic music can improve your performance. (And it doesn\u2019t <em>have <\/em>to be Rocky. If you prefer hip hop, R&amp;B or even metal, do your thing.)
