Sugar won&#8217;t kill you. And it&#8217;s OK to crave\u00a0sweets.<\/p>\n<p>Feel better? Good, because no one should ever feel bad about wanting to enjoy food. But sometimes we have to be strategic about how we create our favorite snacks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/healthy-recipes-no-bake-protein-cookies-and-egg-nog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cookies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/protein-peanut-butter-cups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">peanut butter cups<\/a>? Yeah, we&#8217;ve got healthy variations for those that taste just like the real thing.<\/p>\n<p>Rice Krispie treats? Now that was a new challenge, but a fan favorite because it&#8217;s a simple recipe that can serve as a quick meal or snack. Enter peanut butter protein rice krispies treats.\u00a0We tested on kids and adults and the feedback was unanimous: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/eat-damn-dessert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">healthy dessert<\/a> is now served&#8230;with an extra boost of protein.<\/p>\n<h2>Why it\u2019s a Healthy Recipe<\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s exactly how we made the classic sweet into a healthy treat.<\/p>\n<p>We traded the rice cereal to organic brown rice cereal. This may not seem like a big switch, but check out the ingredient list on both and you\u2019ll see\u00a0fewer ingredients and less processed additives.<\/p>\n<p>We replaced the butter with peanut butter. Any nut or seed butter would work just as well, if you have a peanut allergy.<\/p>\n<p>Popular marshmallow brands are usually made of artificial flavors, blue 1 dye (why?) and other filers. In this recipe, there\u2019s honey and brown rice syrup. That\u2019s it. Yes, it&#8217;s still sugar, but quantities have been cut to what you need, instead of packing on excess calories for no reason.<\/p>\n<p>Even better? We added protein, so you\u2019ll satisfy your sweet tooth and hunger pains. And, of course, it\u2019s great for building muscle too.<\/p>\n<h2>Ingredients<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Cook time:<\/strong> 15 minutes, plus 30 minutes in the freezer<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yields:<\/strong> 16 squares<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 \u00bd cups brown rice cereal<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup all-natural creamy peanut butter<\/li>\n<li>\u00bc cup organic brown rice syrup<\/li>\n<li>\u00bc cup raw, unfiltered honey<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp. pure vanilla extract<\/li>\n<li>2 scoops vanilla protein powder*<\/li>\n<li>2 tbsp. coconut oil, unrefined, cold-pressed<\/li>\n<li>1 tbsp. cocoa (cacao) powder<\/li>\n<li>\u00bc c dark chocolate chips**, stevia-sweetened if possible<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3618 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bornfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/rice-krispies-ingredients.png\" alt=\"rice krispies ingredients\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>*We used BueBonnet 100% natural, artificial flavor and preservative-free whey protein isolate derived from grass-fed cows, vanilla flavor. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>**We used Lily\u2019s Stevia-sweetened dark chocolate chips you can find at most health food stores or Amazon. <\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Directions<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Grease an 8&#215;8 Pyrex or baking pan with coconut oil. Coconut oil spray would be even easier. Just stick with a sweet or flavorless oil.<\/li>\n<li>In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, add the peanut butter, brown rice syrup, honey and vanilla. Stir until smooth, about 3 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in one scoop (33g) protein powder and the rice cereal. The mixture should be soft, but not runny. If it\u2019s too hard too stir with a spoon, add a little more honey to mix.<\/li>\n<li>Add the rice crispy mix to the Pyrex. Spread and press into pan to make it as compact as possible.<\/li>\n<li>In the same saucepan (it\u2019s OK if there\u2019s peanut butter residue\u2014there are worse things to worry about in life), add the coconut oil, cocoa powder and chocolate chips. Stir until smooth. Remove from heat, add the other scoop of protein powder, and stir.<\/li>\n<li>Top the rice crispy with the protein chocolate topping. Spread it all over to reach the corners.<\/li>\n<li>Freeze for 30 minutes. Then cut into 16 squares.
