I took a survey of the smartest people in fitness and health and then aggregated their top responses to create a list of what really matters. Here’s what you can learn if you really want to excel in the fitness industry.

1. You helped people, sacrificed personal bias, answered questions honestly, never stopped learning, and did everything you could to make your clients better.

2. You helped people, sacrificed personal bias, answered questions honestly, never stopped learning, and did everything you could to make your clients better.

3. You helped people, sacrificed personal bias, answered questions honestly, never stopped learning, and did everything you could to make your clients better.

5. You helped people, sacrificed personal bias, answered questions honestly, never stopped learning, and did everything you could to make your clients better.

Filter out everything else, and this is what really matters. This is a fitness professional’s job. Anything else that comes with the territory is a byproduct, not a primary focus. Remember that, and you’ll enjoy the industry and be much more likely to have success.

You might be surprised how just a few words can change your fitness point of view and put you on a path to success.

Eds note: Where do I get my fitness motivation, inspiration, and mindset? Oftentimes it comes from music and workout songs. I look at all forms of writing like a director watches a film: I notice the elements, rather than the big picture. This is not about good songs versus bad songs. It’s how a lyric, a line, or a sequence in a song influences or impacts my mindset. That’s what makes it part of my workout music playlists.

More importantly, these posts are designed to take the lyrics and interpret in a way that adds meaning or value to your life. -AB

The Music:To tell you the truth, I’ve said before tomorrow I start in a new direction. I know I’ve been half asleep; I’m never doing that again. I look straight at what’s coming ahead and soon it’s going to change in a new direction. Every night as I’m falling asleep these words repeating in my head.” -“Come Downstairs and Say Hello,” by Guster

Success breeds more success. But the real goal is to make the process easier so you will believe.

The Mindset: Don’t Wait for Tomorrow

The fitness industry is filled with wishful thinking.

We want to lose weight. We want to build muscle. We want to be healthy and avoid disease.

Intention is not the problem. It’s execution.

But what’s at the heart of why we can’t execute? Is it willpower? Is it a true desire? Is it laziness? (As so many ‘fit’ people like to suggest.)

I think it’s something simpler: it’s success versus failure. Is there a structure in place that enables you to succeed and then believe?

This song hits at the core of our need to become better. Everything about it takes you through the emotions of change.

The slow, almost-somber start and pace reflects probably what most feel when they take on a new journey: the words are there, but the belief isn’t.

But then at some point a pivot occurs. There’s a pause. A break in the music. A shift in mindset.

The pace picks up. The sound of the music is different. And there’s hope, life, and a genuine belief that this is going to happen.

In this song it occurs right around right around 1:45. You can hear the shift. It’s the proverbial light bulb going off. The spark. And then, just like that you believe. You feel it in full force right around 2:50 and it’s almost as if you’re listening to a completely different song.

So how do you get to the 1:45 timestamp in your life?

Make yourself believe sooner. Restrict the barriers that prevent you from feeling success immediately.

Don’t wait for tomorrow to start. Don’t make the goal so high.

If you want to get back in shape, start somewhere simple. Maybe it’s telling your friends about your goals, or sign up for a consultation or meet with a trainer. Watch a Rocky montage and get fired up to lift some weights. It’s part of what I find interesting in the title of the song: It’s not about going upstairs. It’s come downstairs and say hello. Make it a downhill process.

Every box that you “check off” is success.

Success breeds more success. But the real goal is to make the process easier so you will believe. The ability to reach your goals should be inevitable and not a question.

When that happens, you will go to sleep every night with the words repeating in your head.

You can change. You will change. This time it’s really going to happen.

Why? Because tomorrow you start in a new direction.

[Ear muff warning]

“What the fuck Facebook?”

Step inside Born Fitness headquarters and it’s a phrase you were likely to hear just a few months ago. I assume we’re not the only ones who uttered those words after Facebook implemented yet another News Feed sorting algorithm.

For those not familiar, Facebook has drastically reduced a business’ organic reach per fan. The reasoning behind this is Facebook has grown to over 1 billion global users. The number of friends and page likes are higher than ever. As a result the noise has become almost deafening and Facebook is now determining what content you see and what you don’t.

A study done by EdgeRank Checker of 1,000 pages that posted almost 50,000 times confirms that the organic reach per page has decreased over the last 2 years:

  • Feb 2012 = 16%
  • Sep 2013 = 12.60%
  • Nov 2013 = 10.15%
  • Dec 2013 = 7.83%
  • Mar 2014 = 6.51%

This shows almost a 60% decline. Rather than give up on Facebook here is what we did to continue to thrive.

Increase Reach and Engagement

This may be hard to hear, but you’re going to have to spend some money on Facebook and “boost” your post.  If two Jewish brothers can do it, you can too.

All it took was $5.

We have been running tests on Facebook for boosted posts compared to non-boosted posts. The only way to determine if it will work for you is to test. Here’s the breakdown from two posts a day apart:

Date People Reached Boosted?
6/11/14 750 No
6/12/14 8,256 Yes

We increased our reach 1101%.

Was the content different? Not really.

Did we post at a different time? No.

Did we invest a ton of money and pay off Facebook? Last time I checked, one share of Facebook is a lot more than $5.

While it’s possible that one post was simple more popular than another, the reach goes beyond content popularity.

The purpose of this example is to show you what most likely the majority of your competitors aren’t doing right now. Remember, he who gets the most leads usually gets the most customers.

Target…Target…Target

At Born Fitness we allocate a percentage of each day determining who our customers are and how we can better serve them. We want to know their gender, age, location, fitness knowledge, etc.

By better understanding our customers we can also more effectively market to them. This includes on Facebook.

When you are creating a Facebook ad you are given these fields to complete

Facebook Target Search

This may look basic, but under these categories lay hundreds of thousands of different targeting options. You simply need to find the ones that apply to your target market. Facebook has made dramatic improvements to their targeting options within the past year.

So you may be asking yourself, “What if I don’t have time to find out all of this information about my target market and existing customers?”

I’d first tell you make time. I’d then tell you to go to Similar Web for 10 minutes. Similar Web is a free analytics tool that can tell you a great deal about the people going to both you and your competitors’ sites. Then apply this useful information to your target audience on Facebook.

My advice: Always make sure your main focus is on channels that you control – your website, your newsletter, and your blog. Spend your time creating leads with your newsletter and native ads on your blog. This way you are in the driver seat and not someone at Facebook. By relying on a third party, you forfeit the majority of your rights to sell to that audience. Some may consider it unfair but it’s reality. Then determine if you have the budget and time to reinforce your reach using Facebook Ads.

What happens when you give lottery tickets to people for free? Something incredible.

Just the other day I saw a post on The Chive about #RAKit week. For those of you not familiar, we’re talking “random acts of kindness.” This is the type of thing The Chive does: pay it forward and make others feel awesome.

And their efforts are not lost. Millions of people read the site and then follow their lead. The post was amazing and left me inspired, not to mention it hit home on many levels.

In my own relationship with my wife, the best things I ever do are the random acts that are unexpected. Flowers on Valentine’s Day are nice; flowers on a random Tuesday? Those make her feel more loved than anyone.

That mentality serves as the backbone of my own #bethechange movement. When you do something good for others it creates a domino effect. See good, do good, pass it on.

My job then is make sure that the giving continues randomly and endlessly. That’s why I’m following the lead of #RAKit Week and letting it flow here at Born Fitness. Because what happens when you just give for no reason? Happiness. Lots of it.

The #BeTheChange Random Acts of Kindness Giveaway

For the next 48 hours I’m going to be giving away prizes every 6 hours. The #RAKit-inspired loot will include items that the most appeal to people that visit my site and work with me. (And yes, all of these will be free for the winners.)

**Editors note: This list is growing. Actor Joe Manganiello just added a free subscription to his Evolution  online program, and Muscle & Fitness has tossed in a subscription and workout schwag. Muscle Milk also joined the fun with a supplement prize pack.

  • Online coaching
  • FitnessLives T-shirts…the same one worn by Arnold [yes, Schwarzenegger] during his training for T5
  • Be. Born. Fit. T-shirts. (not even released to the public
  • Joe Manganiello’s Evolution359.com workout and diet program
  • Signed books (Engineering the Alpha, Getting Abs, Women’s Health Big Book of Abs, Men’s Health Diet, Women’s Health Diet, Impact! Body Plan)
  • Muscle & Fitness magazine subscription and workout gear
  • Free membership to the Getting Shredded Community
  • Muscle Milk supplement bonanza (1 case RTD’s, 2 tubs of Muscle Milk, 1 Monster Milk Amino, Tray of Cytomax Energy Drops)
  • Workout gear
  • Consulting Call (for business or diet)

Oh yeah, and I’m also going to give away $100 cash to the last winner. Because who doesn’t love a little extra money in their pocket? To enter to win, just leave your name and email below, and I’ll be randomly selecting winners and letting them know their prize. Let the #RAKit week spread and inspire you to #BeTheChange.

When you only run 2 sales per year, making big money is supposed to be easy. Or at least that’s what you’d imagine. But if were to have looked at the total sales after the first 4 hours of our bi-annual sale, you would have thought we’d never done this before.

That’s what happens when you stare back at a whopping zero sales.

(Yep, zero. Allow that to sink in.)

Did we lose our ability to sell? Forget what works? Put out a shitty product?

No to all three—but we did make a fundamental error that is a valuable lesson for your business.

Why the Sale?

We make more money when we don’t promote or discount our coaching programs. For three years we’ve had a waitlist, and the average amount of time a client stays with us has increased almost threefold. Customer satisfaction is at an all-time high. So why offer a sale to begin with?

The answer is the ability to learn about our customer base and our own business model. Our initial struggles allowed us to look at changes we attempted to make compared to previous sales, and quickly understand the errors of our ways and prime ourselves for a big turnaround.

As they say, the only way to learn is by doing. So we run sales to learn what works, what doesn’t, and how people respond to different offers.

During the planning stages of the Memorial Day Sale we wanted to provide as many great deals as possible. We figured why not put the majority of our services at prices people would have a hard time saying no to? Originally we offered 4 discounted options on the sales page.

To bring everyone up to speed, our coaching model is different than most you see. Our model is not scalable in the sense that we pride ourselves on a very personalized, one-on-one approach that takes a great deal of time and calculation. By doing so we have built a model on scarcity and the promise that this program is worth the wait. Simultaneously we pride ourselves on having one of the most affordable online coaching models given the individualized attention. Even with our low price we never sacrifice value. It’s a unique model, one very similar to Amazon’s, since we are willing to sacrifice a lower margin for a longer customer value.

From No Sales to Undeniable Success

Now back to the sale. We launched and didn’t see a sale for the first 4 hours! We were definitely surprised. But rather than panic, we went back and discussed potential reasons for the poor opening performance. After the first 24 hours we had generated sales, but were still not seeing the numbers we had forecasted.

We then completely redesigned the sales page. We eliminated all but one item.

The thinking was simple: What if there were so many deals that people ended up choosing none?

The only way to find out was to test this hypothesis. Once we changed the sales page to only one item we saw conversions increase 180% in the next 24 hours. This was followed by another huge surge on the final day of the sale.

The reason for our success shouldn’t be all that surprising. In fact, research has shown too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. A study done by Sheena Iyengar, a professor at Columbia University proves this exact point. The professor set up a study where they placed either 6 containers or 24 containers of jam in a section of a store and allowed people to try samples. What’s incredible is 30% of the customers who had sampled from the 6 containers purchased the jam, whereas only 3% of those who were subjected to 24 containers purchased the jam.

The point being that even though we make think our customers want more options—the reality may be just the opposite. If something isn’t working don’t overreact, but make sure you consider all factors that could be contributing to less than desirable sales. Each market is different and nothing is status quo. Remember that there is no right answer, rather a better solution to your problem.

Muscle-building research isn’t always about people who love to build muscle.

The year was 2004. The quote came from one of my esteemed professors at the University of Colorado during a late-night statistical analysis.

Back then, I was just a young “professional research assistant.” Translation: I was helping write grants, designing experiments, running tests, and collecting and analyzing data. It was my first real job, and it honestly wasn’t that much fun. Some days would just consist of hour-after-hour looking a numbers, running ANOVA’s, ANCOVA’s, and regressions (if you don’t get the statistical reference, consider yourself lucky…unless you love numbers), and digging for truth.

During a late night conversation, I was listing off all the research I wish I could do. The cool experiments that I would run if I was in charge of my own lab. I was fascinated by everything. I wanted to understand training and nutrition. But just as important, I was obsessed with psychology. I wanted to understand behavioral change, and why for some people exercise is as automatic as breath—while for others it’s more uncomfortable than one-legged hula hooping. (Give it a try and you’ll understand.)

It was at that point that my mentor explained the sometimes very political nature of research. It was something I would quickly learn during my two years as a researcher. The barriers to science are everywhere. It’s hard to earn grant money. And it can be even harder to get published. (Depending on the publication.) It’s the underbelly of science that many people never see. It’s one thing to write a thesis paper or review—both incredible labors of love, passion, and insomnia. It’s another to conduct a study and structure it in a way where the findings can be scientific.

Bridging the Gap: Science Meets Training

If you talk to most great trainers, they will admit that science is important. But reliance on science almost always comes with a caveat: What happens on the training floor will always be ahead of what you discover in a lab.

And it’s true. When you’re given a program, you can know within a give period of time whether it works or not.

This is not the cause with science. Not only does research have many barriers, conducting a study takes time to get funding…time to be approved…time to be tested and analyzed and dissected.

Then, when you’re finally ready to share your findings you must write your research paper…wait even longer for it to be reviewed….finally have it accepted…and then wait again for it to be published.

It can make jury duty seem like a quick process.

In the training world, you create programs, test them on clients, and then learn what works. You understand sets and reps, tempo and rest. You start to understand what builds strength and what builds muscle. The best ways to burn fat and how to improve cardio.

All the rules still apply and what you learn has value.

But at the end of the day, it’s not hard science and there’s a limit to what you can claim. And not for the reasons you think.

Anecdotal evidence—training plans and diet—are an essential part of science. This is where people misunderstand “BroScience.” This can be the hotbed of where we develop hypotheses. There’s nothing with trying some protocols not proven by science and revealing what it did for you and trying to replicate.

But that’s the limitation—or at least the tantalizing aspect.

What’s valuable is not just know if it works for one person, but if it can work for everyone.

When you follow a routine, there are many potential factors that could influence your results. These are variables you can’t control or at least aren’t being analyzed.

Ever wonder why one program can work great for a friend but not for you? It’s because there could be a variable that is influencing the results. But without some sort of scientific method or analysis to control these variables (or account for them) the overall conclusions you can draw are limited.

So while the jacked due at the gym with 20-inch arms might be awesome at building his 20-inch arms, some of his lessons might not be scientifically applicable to all people. That does not make him any less knowledgeable or his results less impressive. It just puts limits on the definitive nature of what caused the progress. (Outside the obvious hard work and good eating.)

You want to know what works. You want faith that the effort you put into training and diet has a high probability of success.

I became tired of the battle between the scientists and the trainers, so I decided to bring them together to fight on the same team.

And despite many advancements and some great work that continues to be published in scientific journal, I still read far too many studies that left me wanting more. You know the ones that play with rats, only do leg extension, or only focus on beginners who have never touched a weight.

I was done with shitty research, and I was ready to do something about it.

Enter the Muscle Lab

About a year ago I finally figured out how to take my inner science nerd and combine it with my love of real life training and diet. But it took some recruiting, lots of planning, and finding ways to improve the limitations of traditional research. If you’re going to build a lab, you have to start with a great team.

First I called Alan Aragon, one of the world’s most renowned and respected nutritionists. Alan is an advisor for Men’s Health and an international speaker. Most importantly, he works with real clients and produces real results, all while relying on scientifically-proven methods. Alan is a “broscientist.”

Then I reached out to Dr. Brad Schoenfeld. Brad is equally “bro” with his love of bodybuilding, but he’s as much a muscle geek as anyone. As a professor, his research-driven approach has sold 10’s of thousands of copies of books, and he continues to produce some of the best new findings that push the entire industry forward.

My goal was simple: Break all the barriers of traditional research while still maintaining the integrity of science.

The result is The Muscle Lab. With the time and effort of Mr. Aragon and Dr. Schoenfeld, we designed an approach that would remove all the ridiculousness of bad programs, and allow for real people to have access to real experts, and then be able to analyze real results. No more crappy diets or flawed workouts.

The setup was as simple:

  1. Alan would handle all nutrition.
  2. Brad would handle the workout design.
  3. I would handle the coaching, data collection, and making sure that all users had the support and accountability they needed to stay on track, all while providing a virtual lab that would make it more fun than any science experiment.

The focus: Help real people build as much muscle as possible in 3 months.

After a year of work, the Muscle Lab is finally open.

It’s the ultimate online coaching experience. You have three coaches to help you pack on muscle. It’s access to the type of diet and muscle building expertise that is normally limited to a select few. If you were to consult with all three of us, the price would be more than $1,000. So we decided to change the game.

Now you can have the muscle building plans from Brad Schoenfeld, and a diet from Alan that is personalized to the exact workout you’ll be performing and your goal body weight.

You’ll be kept accountable with weekly check-ins that will help you stay focused, and just as important, log all your data so we can track progress and changes.

Because this is about more than just you.

This is about muscle building research.

The very results that you produce will be analyzed and used to produce research that reflects real workouts, real diets, and real people. And that information will help us continue the search for answers that will make building muscle a little more clear.

It’s the Muscle Lab: A place where science meets results.

But because of the work involved, and the fact that you are working with Alan, Brad, and myself, the study is very limited.

We will only be accepting 100 people.

So if you want to work with the best and push science forward, this is your chance to join an experience unlike anything being offered.

This isn’t some over-the-top online product. It’s not about hype. It’s a real live coaching experience that allows you to work with the best coaches.

Unlike most research, this approach is all about the people who love building muscle.

And that’s how science should be.

To join the Muscle Lab, sign up here.

This isn’t your typical blog post. It’s more of a mission statement and a call to action.

I’ve spent the last 13 years of my life trying to help more people with their health and fitness.

My books, articles, and talks have reached tens of millions of people. And I continue to try and influence, guide, and help more.

But this isn’t about me.

This is about empowering you.

Giving you more control of your goals, offering to broaden and grow the platform for your thoughts and ideas, and helping you discover all ways you can help.

For the last 5 years I’ve been working with people to help them:

  • Become better writers and editors.
  • Reach more people.
  • Have a distinct voice.
  • Teach and improve their social media.
  • Infuse their brand with an approach that allows them to build a relationship with their audience.
  • Identify shortcoming or oversights in their business.
  • Establish a vision and a path to achieving the goals they want

Sharing The Roadmap

I’ve helped people gain access to the mainstream, publish books, become authors, and find ways to scale their business and help others in ways they may have never imagined.

And now it’s time to make that information even more accessible.

This message is about more than just building a business. It’s about allowing the good you have to offer to reach the audience who needs it most.

It’s about enabling you to have the skills and abilities to take your thoughts and share them with others.

Most importantly, it’s the way to really change the health, publishing, and marketing industries: Give more people a voice and a way to communicate.

At this point, I just want to hear from you and understand what you need.

  • If you’re looking for any of the elements I’ve mentioned above, leave me a note.
  • If you want tips on writing, then leave your email.
  • If you desire more information on building a business, leave your email.
  • If you want to better understand social media and growing an audience…leave your email.
  • If you hope to be published—either by a publisher or go the self-publishing route…leave your email.
  • Looking for work efficiency, scheduling, or productivity help…leave your email.
  • If you have no idea what content marketing is (and you should)…leave your email.

(I think you get the point. And you’ll see that this isn’t just another list. It’s a direct line of contact to me.)

It’s time to change the game, and that starts by making you a key player.
